Artist as Teacher
Michael Lewandowski is a middle school art teacher for the Averill Park Central School District in Averill Park, New York. He teaches sixth and seventh grade art through curriculum outlined by the Averill Park Art Department and in accordance with the New York State standards. His innate understanding and practical experience in the visual arts is what made him turn to education.
"As an artist, I find this age to be the most important for students who are developing visual and spatial intelligence. I can see the potential in each and every child as it emerges and feel I can tap into it to provide a foundation for their prospective future. I want every student to know that some day they can make a living at what they love to do and if it's in art, I'm going to make sure they're aware of the possibilities...after all it was a seventh grade teacher who opened my eyes to my own potential."
